While most people have likely been warned about the dangers of making assumptions, the fact is that every person does it — likely several times in a single day. While most assumptions are relatively innocuous, some made by law enforcement officials could potentially lead to criminal charges, such as assuming that a car accident involving a young driver was the result of alcohol or drugs. A man recently charged with drunk driving in Louisiana is likely wondering what evidence supports the charges against him.

The accident that led to the 23-year-old man’s arrest happened on an afternoon in late July. Police claim that he was driving a sedan when it exited the roadway, entering a median. There, police say that it struck the rear of a backhoe.

A passenger in the vehicle, a 24-year-old man, passed away as a result of the accident; reports indicate that he was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver was transported to the hospital with moderate injuries. While police say that there was alcohol in his system, his blood alcohol content is unclear. He now faces multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, careless operation and vehicular homicide.

The accusations the Louisiana young man is facing are serious. While recovering from his own injuries and grieving for the loss of life in the accident, he must also make serious decisions that could potentially impact the rest of his life. As a result, he may benefit from advice from a professional with experience with cases involving drunk driving allegations. Knowing that he has someone with knowledge of the criminal justice system fighting on his behalf can provide him with some confidence about the decisions he makes in the coming months.
