The ongoing drug crisis remains a focus of law enforcement agencies in Louisiana. Ongoing investigations continue to generate warrants that lead to arrests and seizures of drugs and cash. One such investigation led to the execution of multiple warrants in the Baton Rouge area on a recent night. The suspects arrested as a result of the warrants face multiple drug charges.
A joint investigation between the police of Ascension Parish, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office and Gonzales Police resulted in the issue and execution of six search warrants. The searches reportedly resulted in the seizure of a significant amount of marijuana. The searches also revealed several weapons and over $500,000 in cash.
In addition to the drugs and cash that were seized, the police arrested five men and said more arrests may be pending. The men ranged in age from 20 to 49 years old. They were all charged with possession with intent to distribute. Four of the five are also facing weapons charges.
Facing drug charges can be scary in Louisiana. A person facing such charges who is not familiar with the rights that he or she is protected by may make ill advised or erroneous statements to police officers. A person facing charges has a right to an attorney who will be familiar with the rights of the accused and can ensure that those rights are protected throughout the criminal justice process. The accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The burden of proof of guilt falls to the prosecution and must be supported by the evidence properly collected during the investigation.
