Man facing drug charges after arrest by special unit

The fight against narcotics and illegal drugs is an ongoing one in Louisiana and all over the country. In an effort to further reduce drug crime and the number of drug charges area police forces are putting special units into place in an attempt to curtail the illegal drug trade. One such unit is known as the Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) and is operating in the Lafayette area.

In a recent operation, the TNT unit responded to a call regarding suspected illegal drug activity at an area motel. Upon arrival, the agents allegedly found an assortment of illegal drugs including crystal meth, marijuana and heroin with an estimated combined street value of approximately $136,000. Two handguns were also reportedly found on the premises.

The officers arrested a 34-year-old man who was at the scene at the time of their arrival and charged him with possession of illegal drugs. Further investigation reportedly revealed that he had a protective order against him and therefore did not have a legal right to the guns in his possession. He was transported to an area facility for formal booking.

TNT and other similar units have been put in place to up the fight against the illegal drug trade. The officers in these units must comply with all of the existing rules regarding gathering of evidence and preserving the accused’s rights under the law.
