Couple faces Louisana drug charges re meth operation

A couple in Louisiana was recently arrested for reportedly running a methamphetamine distribution operation. The two individuals were arrested on drug charges following a search of their home. They are 40 and 38 years old.

During the search of the couple’s home, police say they found over 70 grams of meth. They also allegedly discovered a vehicle that had been stolen, drug paraphernalia and a firearm. The arrest was made by the Louisiana State Police and the sheriff’s office in Vernon Parish.

The two been charged with four counts of the distribution of methamphetamine as well as the possession of over 28 grams of the drug with the intention of distributing it. They are also charged with possessing a firearm while in the presence of the drug. Another charge involves possession of stolen property valued at more than $5,000.

Those facing drug charges may decide to fight the allegations at trial, where prosecutors must prove the elements of the crime beyond a reasonable doubt before any conviction can be handed down. This standard exists in an effort to protect innocent people from being convicted of and sentenced for crimes they did not commit. In some circumstances, the accused may also be given the chance to strike a plea agreement with prosecutors. A first-time offender in Louisiana might be eligible for a pretrial diversion that avoids a conviction, and thus incarceration, if he or she complies with specific conditions set by the court. Defense counsel will review the legal issues and suggest the best strategy in light of the circumstances surrounding the case.
